WordPress Developer

Job Description
As a WordPress Developer, you’ll spend your time creating custom functionality on new and existing projects in WordPress, with a focus on backend development. The WordPress Developer will spend 80% of their time writing great code, 10% reviewing code of more junior developers and/or contractors, and 10% ensuring projects are aligned alongside dedicated project managers.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Applying architectural knowledge to new projects
  • Engineering mid to large scale and sometimes complex websites using WordPress, including custom theme, and plugin development.
  • Know when to leverage contributed or paid plugins and when to build custom plugins.
  • Maintain and administer WordPress themes, plugins and sites
  • Applying expertise in MySQL, relational databases and MySQL
  • Applying working knowledge in JavaScript, AJAX and JQuery
  • Using templates to theme
  • Applying proficiency in table-less CSS with working knowledge of modern CSS compilers.
  • Using git and code reviews before pushing
  • Integrating open source and third-party applications into existing systems
  • Building user interfaces for websites and/or web applications
  • Developing responsive websites using modern CSS frameworks
  • Building custom WordPress plugins
  • Writing clean, well designed code, following industry best practices.
  • Solving complex performance problems and architectural challenges.
  • Assisting the sales process with estimates on future work.
  • Providing code review and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Working knowledge using and building Custom Post Types, Taxonomies, Guten blocks, ACF Fields, faceted search, gravity forms modifications.

Required Key Skills, Experience, and Education

  • 3 + years experience building complex, high traffic sites using WordPress and custom PHP.
  • Expertise in creating and implementing custom themes and at least the desire to build custom plugins.
  • Experienced in connecting WordPress to third-party services using API integrations and plugins.
  • Experience with estimating, planning, designing, testing, and building WordPress sites.
  • Strong front end skills including solid experience with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and direction to local, remote, and offshore teammates.
  • Experience managing projects with Jira (or similar)
  • Experience with eCommerce development including WooCommerce
  • A working knowledge of WordPress; generally know when to use something off-the-shelf, and when a custom solution is appropriate.
  • Knowledgeable and opinionated about software maintainability.
  • Self-driven continuing education on framework and broader software development practices.
  • Comfort at the SQL command line.
  • Some experience with modern front-end/ECMAscript frameworks, implementation of decoupled solutions, e.g. with Vue or React.
  • Working knowledge of the Roots.io stack
  • Skill in Sass/Less, CSS Grid and Flexbox.
  • Experience as a member of a team using SDLC basics like CI/CD
  • constructive code review and mentoring of juniors.
  • Experience using the command-line to perform daily tasks, git skills are very important.

Salary Range
$70,000-$110,000 annually, commensurate with experience, skills, education and/or training
