Copy Editor

Waterford.org is looking for a skilled Copy Editor to join our Marketing Team! Someone who is a master of style, who can jump in to polish and improve copy for all kinds of writing while also being mindful of branding, SEO, audience, tone, and messaging for each piece, would be a great fit for the team!

As a Marketing Copy Editor, you will work closely with the Marketing Team to polish copy created across the organization. As you edit emails, short ads, website pages, product flyers, social media, presentations, blog posts, or informational articles, it will be vital to consider content and language that is inclusive to all readers, incorporating best practices related to cultural competence and asset-based language.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Polish copy to be creative, on-brand, inclusive, readable, and error-free
  • Expertly edit for various audiences, including diverse families, donors, educators, and district leaders, while centering equity and asset-based language in all Waterford communications
  • Proactively ask questions about copy, audience, uses, etc.
  • Edit for the reader while also keeping an eye on SEO needs and preserving inclusive tone and language
  • Approach editing as a collaborative venture with writers; honor the writers voice and clearly articulate reasons for your edits when needed
  • Mentor writers and others on style, branding, and use of asset-based and inclusive language
  • Manage multiple projects and shifting priorities
  • Continuously champion, promote, and advance diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence at Waterford.org
  • Collaborate on and contribute to organizational DEI efforts and goals

Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in English, Communications, or related field
  • 5+ years demonstrated experience in a copy-editing role
  • Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
  • Experience creating/editing communication collateral for economically and culturally diverse audiences
  • Experience in education, EdTech, or nonprofit sectors a plus
  • CMS (WordPress) and digital publishing experience a plus

Waterford.org team members are located across the United States and primarily work from home. We anticipate this position will pay $65,000+ depending on the education, experience and skill level of the individual we hire. We offer a phenomenal benefits package that includes fully paid premiums for health insurance, dental insurance, basic life insurance, and disability insurance. New hires receive a one-time HSA contribution. Retirement contributions are matched up to 5% by the organization. Plus, a generous vacation, sick, and holiday offering. Currently, Waterford requires all new hires to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or file a religious or medical exemption (as applicable by federal, state, and local law).
