WordPress Developer

Description:

Position Objective:

To build and maintain PETA’s WordPress sites and support other applications and integrations

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Work with designers, project managers, stakeholders, and other developers to take projects from the design phase to functional application
• Create WordPress plugins as needed to support site functionality and integrations with other services and APIs
• Create well-structured WordPress themes with performance in mind that are easy to maintain and build on
• Collaborate on creative solutions to user interface and technical challenges
• Troubleshoot and fix browser inconsistencies, user problems, and javascript errors
• Optimize websites for mobile users, including supporting AMP and Facebook Instant Articles
• Recommend and initiate improvements to existing sites, operating procedures, and use of technology
• Serve as a primary point of contact for WordPress technical queries
• Follow WordPress development, recommending any changes needed for upcoming releases
• Review other developer’s code and make recommendations
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of development-related standard operating procedures
• Document work and develop necessary support documents or assist the team with development documentation
• Communicate well and coordinate work with a distributed team
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

. Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of five years of related experience in website development roles
• Demonstrated experience developing WordPress themes and plugins from scratch
• Regular contributions to the WordPress Community (Support Forum, Documentation, etc.)
• Demonstrated experience using GitHub in a distributed development environment
• Knowledge of best practices for accessibility, performance, and responsive design
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
• Ability and willingness to travel on occasion
• Extensive experience with the following technologies:

o WordPress coding standards and best practices

o Gutenberg and Gutenberg block development

o PHP, javascript, HTML5, CSS/SASS

o REST APIs

o Front-end build tools (Gulp, npm scripts, etc.)

o Responsive frameworks (Foundation, Bootstrap, etc.)

o Using WordPress as a CMS, knowledge of core actions & filters

o Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager

• Familiarity with the following technologies/programs/platforms is helpful:

o CDNs (Cloudflare)

o Website localization

o Laravel

o Cookie consent solutions

o Elasticsearch

o Any of the following: React, Angular, Vue.js, or similar JavaScript frameworks
