Junior Wordpress Developer

We are seeking a new WordPress Developer to join our team.


The ideal candidate should have a passion for building high-quality websites, a working knowledge of WordPress, and a desire to build proficiency in web development technologies. As Pillory Barn’s junior WordPress developer, you will be part of an important area of our in-house digital team, using your knowledge and creativity to develop high-quality and well-coded websites and digital products and supporting our clients in maintaining and updating existing websites.


Working with our senior developers and reporting to the Creative & Digital Director, you are responsible for delivering quality website builds that are relevant and meet the ever-evolving standards of the web. You will work closely with both the design and content teams as well as the digital team and will be able to contribute to team brainstorming sessions in finding new and exciting ways to improve our processes and deliver outstanding digital services to our clients.


This position is perfectly suited for someone looking to continue their journey with a leading digital agency. The role includes training and development across areas including accessibility, analytics, optimisation, security and relevant working processes as required and subject to experience and knowledge.


Role and responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain WordPress websites and customise themes
  • Ensure websites are optimised for performance and security
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues as needed
  • Knowledge and experience in using Content Management Systems (i.e. ACF)
  • Producing clean, smart, cross-browser compatible code that works across multiple devices
  • Working knowledge of SEO best practices (training provided)
  • Working knowledge of accessibility for the web (training provided)


Technical skills required:

  • Excellent HTML / JS / CSS skills
  • CSS pre-processing (SASS) knowledge is desirable but not essential
  • PHP and MySQL experience are desirable
  • Use of Google web tools (Analytics / Tag Manager / Search Console and others)
  • Bedrock/Sage (WordPress base) experience is desirable, but training can be provided
  • Use of command line tools such as Yarn and NPM
  • Familiar with GIT/SVN and Bit Bucket
  • Ideally, have knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (XD, Photoshop, Illustrator)


Creative Responsibilities:

  • Working with creative designers, copywriters and marketing to deliver supplied digital briefs
  • Using your knowledge, creativity and ideas and turning them into relevant and engaging digital products
  • Ability to work to design guidelines and examples to create new features or functionality for existing websites.


Agency Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with designers and other developers to create responsive, accessible and user-friendly websites
  • Articulate clear instruction, feedback & consultation with teams, clients and suppliers, as well as take ‘ownership’ of digital tasks and/or projects
  • Help to refine agency processes and stay on top of evolving digital development

  • Raise and negotiate timelines and quality considerations
  • Work comfortably in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment
